Overview

This is a combination chemotherapy regimen commonly used in the treatment of breast cancer. It consists of three main components: - An anthracycline (most commonly doxorubicin or epirubicin), which intercalates DNA and inhibits topoisomerase II, leading to DNA damage and cell death. - Cyclophosphamide, an alkylating agent that crosslinks DNA strands and prevents cell division. - A taxane (either paclitaxel or docetaxel), which stabilizes microtubules and disrupts mitosis by preventing microtubule depolymerization. The regimen is typically administered sequentially—anthracycline plus cyclophosphamide first, followed by a taxane. It is used as adjuvant or neoadjuvant therapy for early-stage or high-risk breast cancer and sometimes for recurrent disease. The specific drugs within each class may vary based on patient factors; for example, paclitaxel (Taxol) or docetaxel (Taxotere) may be chosen as the taxane component[1][2][4][5].
