Overview

BioThrax is a sterile, milky-white suspension for intramuscular or subcutaneous injection containing proteins from cell-free filtrates of an avirulent, nonencapsulated strain of Bacillus anthracis. It is indicated for active immunization to prevent disease caused by Bacillus anthracis in adults 18 through 65 years old who are at high risk of exposure. BioThrax works by stimulating the immune system to produce antibodies against the protective antigen (PA) protein of B. anthracis, thereby neutralizing the activities of lethal and edema toxins produced by the bacteria. The vaccine does not contain live or killed bacteria and will not treat active infection[1][2][5][6]. Efficacy for post-exposure prophylaxis is based on animal studies.
