Overview

Anti-C1q antibodies are a class of therapeutic monoclonal antibodies designed to inhibit the classical complement pathway by specifically targeting C1q, the initiating protein of the cascade. By binding to C1q, these agents prevent the activation of the complement system, thereby reducing inflammation and tissue damage in various autoimmune and neurodegenerative diseases. In the context of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and lupus nephritis (LN), endogenous anti-C1q autoantibodies serve as significant biomarkers for disease activity and renal involvement, often measured via ELISA for diagnostic and prognostic purposes. Therapeutically, anti-C1q antibodies like ANX005 are being developed to treat conditions including Guillain-Barré syndrome, warm autoimmune hemolytic anemia, and Huntington's disease by blocking the upstream trigger of complement-mediated injury.
