Overview

Albatroz Therapeutics is developing a first-in-class monoclonal antibody targeting cell-surface calnexin for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. While calnexin is typically an intracellular chaperone protein involved in protein folding, it can be translocated to the cell surface via the GALA (GalNAc-T Activation) glycosylation pathway in certain pathological conditions. On the cell surface, calnexin promotes the degradation of the extracellular matrix (ECM), a process that drives tissue destruction and chronic inflammation in the gut. This therapeutic antibody is designed to bind to surface-exposed calnexin and inhibit its role in ECM degradation, thereby preventing intestinal damage and facilitating mucosal healing. The program is currently in the preclinical stage of development.
