Overview

Anti-CCR3 antibody refers to a class of monoclonal antibodies designed to target the C-C chemokine receptor type 3 (CCR3), a G protein-coupled receptor predominantly expressed on eosinophils, basophils, and Th2 cells. CCR3 is the primary receptor for the eotaxin family of chemokines (CCL11, CCL24, and CCL26), which are essential for the selective recruitment and activation of eosinophils at sites of allergic and fibrotic inflammation. In research settings, such as the study conducted by researchers at KU Leuven and presented at ECCO 2024, anti-CCR3 antibodies are frequently utilized as experimental tools to deplete eosinophils in vivo. This allows investigators to assess the functional role of eosinophils in disease models, such as chronic DSS-induced colitis and intestinal fibrosis. While CCR3 remains a significant therapeutic target for eosinophilic conditions like asthma and eosinophilic esophagitis, many clinical-stage candidates have been small molecule antagonists or antibodies targeting the eotaxin ligands rather than the receptor itself.
