anti-CD19 CAR-T cells (Shanghai GeneChem) is an autologous chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy being developed for the treatment of autoimmune diseases, specifically Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). The therapy involves collecting a patient's T cells and genetically modifying them to express a CAR that recognizes the CD19 protein, a marker found on the surface of B lymphocytes. Once re-infused into the patient, these engineered T cells target and deplete CD19-positive B cells, which are responsible for producing the pathogenic autoantibodies characteristic of SLE. This approach aims to achieve a deep depletion of the B-cell compartment, potentially leading to a "reset" of the immune system and long-term drug-free remission. Shanghai GeneChem is currently evaluating the safety and efficacy of this product in Phase 1 clinical trials for patients with refractory SLE.
