Anti-CD33 CAR T-cells represent a cellular immunotherapy approach designed for the treatment of CD33+ relapsed/refractory acute myeloid leukemia. This therapy involves isolating T cells from a patient or donor and genetically modifying them in the laboratory to express a chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) that specifically recognizes and binds to the CD33 protein, which is commonly found on acute myeloid leukemia cells. Once engineered, these CAR T-cells are expanded to large numbers and then infused intravenously back into the patient. The primary goal of this treatment is to harness the immune system's T cells to specifically target and eliminate cancer cells expressing the CD33 antigen, thereby providing a targeted therapeutic option for patients with this aggressive blood cancer. The City of Hope Medical Center is leading the development of this therapy.
