An anti-CD58 monoclonal antibody is a biologic agent designed to target CD58 (also known as Lymphocyte Function-Associated Antigen 3 or LFA-3), a cell surface glycoprotein that acts as the primary ligand for the CD2 receptor on T cells and natural killer (NK) cells. This interaction is vital for immune cell adhesion and activation. In oncology research, specifically regarding glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), CD58 has been identified as a marker for a highly proliferative subpopulation of glioma stem-like cells (GSCs). These CD58-positive cells exhibit increased self-renewal and resistance to treatment, and their presence in patient tumors is an independent predictor of poor survival. While these antibodies are extensively used as research reagents for flow cytometry and immunohistochemistry to identify and isolate GSCs, they also represent a potential therapeutic platform for disrupting tumor-promoting signaling or enhancing immune recognition of malignant cells.
