Overview
Anti-CD8 monoclonal antibodies represent a class of biologic agents designed to target the CD8 glycoprotein, a transmembrane co-receptor primarily expressed on cytotoxic T lymphocytes and natural killer (NK) cells. These antibodies are widely utilized in research settings to deplete CD8+ T cells or modulate their activity, facilitating the study of cytotoxic immune responses in oncology, viral infections, and autoimmune diseases. A specific therapeutic program under this name is attributed to CytoDyn, which acquired a humanized anti-CD8 monoclonal antibody (GN-07) from ProstaGene. This candidate is in Phase 1 development for the treatment of HIV, where it is being investigated for its potential to reduce the viral reservoir and manage chronic inflammation. The mechanism of action for certain anti-CD8 antibodies, including GN-07, involves the inhibition of CD8 signaling and the antagonism of CD11a (the alpha subunit of LFA-1), which can interfere with leukocyte adhesion and trafficking.
