Overview

Anti-CfaE bovine immunoglobulin G is an orally administered, hyperimmune antibody product derived from bovine colostrum, developed to prevent traveler's diarrhea caused by enterotoxigenic *Escherichia coli* (ETEC). The product is generated by immunizing pregnant cows with CfaE, the minor tip adhesin subunit of the ETEC Colonization Factor Antigen I (CFA/I) fimbriae. The resulting colostrum, rich in specific IgG antibodies, is processed into a therapeutic format. Its mechanism of action involves binding to the CfaE protein on the surface of the bacteria, which prevents the ETEC from adhering to and colonizing the intestinal mucosa. This anti-adhesive approach provides passive immunity to the recipient, neutralizing the pathogen before it can establish an infection. The drug is being developed through a collaborative effort between the biotechnology company Immuron and the U.S. Naval Medical Research Center (NMRC) to protect military personnel and civilian travelers in endemic areas.
