Rh(D) immunoglobulin (also known as anti-D immunoglobulin) is a biologic drug consisting of human-derived IgG antibodies directed against the RhD antigen on red blood cells. It is prepared from the plasma of RhD-negative donors who have been immunized against the RhD antigen. The drug is primarily used to prevent RhD alloimmunization (sensitization) in RhD-negative pregnant women carrying an RhD-positive fetus, thereby preventing hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN). It is also indicated for the treatment of immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) in RhD-positive individuals and to prevent sensitization after incompatible blood transfusions. Rh(D) immunoglobulin works by binding to and neutralizing fetal RhD-positive red blood cells that enter the maternal circulation, preventing the maternal immune system from recognizing them and producing antibodies.
