Overview

Anti-EMMPRIN monoclonal antibodies are therapeutic agents designed to target EMMPRIN (Extracellular Matrix Metalloproteinase Inducer), also known as CD147 or Basigin. EMMPRIN is a cell surface glycoprotein that is highly expressed in various malignancies, including pancreatic, lung, and breast cancers, where it promotes tumor progression, invasion, and metastasis by inducing the production of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and stimulating angiogenesis. These antibodies aim to disrupt these oncogenic processes. Research conducted at the University of Alabama at Birmingham has evaluated novel anti-EMMPRIN antibodies in preclinical models, demonstrating their potential to inhibit tumor growth and enhance the efficacy of chemotherapeutic agents like gemcitabine. Additionally, these antibodies have been investigated as imaging probes when radiolabeled (e.g., with Technetium-99m) to monitor tumor targeting and treatment response via SPECT/CT.
