Overview

Anti-EpCAM antibodies are a class of monoclonal antibodies that target the Epithelial Cell Adhesion Molecule (EpCAM), also known as CD326. EpCAM is a transmembrane glycoprotein highly expressed in most carcinomas, including those of the colon, lung, breast, and prostate, while its expression in normal squamous epithelium is limited. These antibodies are used both as therapeutic agents and as diagnostic tools. Therapeutically, they are designed to eliminate cancer cells through mechanisms such as antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC) and complement-dependent cytotoxicity (CDC). In diagnostics, they are frequently employed in technologies like the "Universal CTC-chip" to capture and enrich circulating tumor cells (CTCs) from blood samples, facilitating liquid biopsy and monitoring of metastatic disease. Specific examples of anti-EpCAM antibodies include edrecolomab and the bispecific antibody catumaxomab.
