Overview
Anti-ESBL IgY is an oral biologic therapy composed of polyclonal chicken egg yolk-derived immunoglobulin Y (IgY) antibodies. It is specifically engineered to target and neutralize extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing bacteria, primarily *Klebsiella pneumoniae* and *Escherichia coli*, within the gastrointestinal tract. Developed by researchers at Uppsala University, the drug is intended to eradicate intestinal carriage of these antibiotic-resistant pathogens, thereby reducing the risk of endogenous infection and horizontal transmission. Although it reached Phase II clinical testing, the trial was terminated early due to challenges in patient recruitment and high mortality in the target population.
