The anti-FSTL3 antibody (specifically the lead candidate FP-101) is a preclinical-stage recombinant monoclonal antibody designed to target and neutralize follistatin-like 3 (FSTL3). FSTL3 is a secreted glycoprotein that acts as an endogenous antagonist of several transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) superfamily ligands, including activin A, activin B, growth differentiation factor 11 (GDF11), and myostatin (GDF8). By binding to FSTL3, the antibody prevents it from complexing with and inhibiting these ligands, thereby increasing the bioavailability of active activin and related factors. The primary therapeutic objective of this approach is to promote pancreatic beta-cell regeneration, enhance beta-cell function, and restore glucose-stimulated insulin secretion, offering a potential disease-modifying treatment for diabetes. Originally researched at Baystate Medical Center, the antibody is being developed by Fairbanks Pharmaceuticals.
