The anti-gD antibody is a humanized monoclonal immunoglobulin G1 (IgG1) antibody developed by Genentech that targets the glycoprotein D (gD) of the Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV). While it was originally derived from research into HSV treatments, it is now primarily utilized within the biotechnology industry as a standard non-binding isotype control for preclinical studies. In pharmacokinetic (PK) and pharmacodynamic (PD) experiments involving animal models such as cynomolgus monkeys or rodents, it serves as a negative control because the gD antigen is not present in these species. This allows researchers to establish the baseline for non-specific antibody clearance and distribution, effectively isolating the target-mediated drug disposition (TMDD) effects of the therapeutic candidates being tested.
