Overview

Anti-gingipain egg yolk antibodies (IgY-GP) are avian-derived polyclonal immunoglobulin Y (IgY) antibodies raised in laying hens immunized with purified gingipains from *Porphyromonas gingivalis*, a key Gram-negative anaerobic bacterium implicated in the pathogenesis of periodontal disease. The active ingredient targets the gingipain family of cysteine proteinases (specifically the Arg-X and Lys-X cysteine proteinases, Rgp and Kgp), which are critical virulence factors involved in bacterial colonization, tissue destruction, and immune evasion. Developed by the Nihon University School of Dentistry, IgY-GP is designed as a passive immunization strategy for periodontal disease. It is formulated as locally retained oral tablets or subgingival gels used adjunctively after scaling and root planing (SRP) to inhibit gingipain activity, reduce pocket depth, and decrease bleeding on probing.
