Overview

Anti-gingipain IgY is a passive immunization therapy developed by the Immunology Research Institute in Gifu (IRIG) for the management of periodontitis (gum disease). The product consists of polyclonal immunoglobulin Y (IgY) antibodies derived from the egg yolks of hens immunized against gingipains, which are essential proteolytic virulence factors (specifically Rgp and Kgp) secreted by the bacterium *Porphyromonas gingivalis*. By binding to these gingipains, the IgY antibodies neutralize their enzymatic activity, thereby preventing the degradation of host tissues, inhibiting bacterial colonization, and disrupting the pathogen's ability to evade the host immune response. This approach is being developed for both human oral health applications and veterinary use in companion animals, such as dogs and cats, to treat or prevent periodontal disease.
