Overview

Anti-GTase IgY is a passive immunization therapy developed by the Immunology Research Institute in Gifu for the prevention and treatment of dental caries (tooth decay). The drug consists of polyclonal immunoglobulin Y (IgY) antibodies extracted from the egg yolks of hens immunized against glucosyltransferase (GTase), an enzyme produced by *Streptococcus mutans*. GTase is critical for the synthesis of water-insoluble glucans, which facilitate the adhesion of bacteria to the tooth surface and the formation of dental plaque. By binding to and neutralizing GTase, these IgY antibodies inhibit bacterial colonization and the subsequent acid production that leads to enamel erosion. The product is often incorporated into oral care formulations such as lozenges, tablets, or functional food products to maintain dental health.
