Anti-hepatitis D virus antibody is a human monoclonal antibody developed by Region Midtjylland (specifically researchers at Aarhus University Hospital) for the treatment of chronic hepatitis D virus (HDV) infection. HDV is a satellite virus that requires the presence of hepatitis B virus (HBV) to infect hepatocytes, as it utilizes HBV surface antigens for its envelope. This antibody, specifically identified as MA17/7 in research, targets the Pre-S1 domain of the large hepatitis B surface protein (L-HBsAg) on the viral envelope. By binding to this domain, the antibody neutralizes HDV particles and blocks their interaction with the sodium taurocholate cotransporting polypeptide (NTCP) receptor, thereby preventing viral entry into host cells. It is currently being evaluated in Phase 1 clinical trials to assess its safety, tolerability, and antiviral efficacy in patients with chronic HDV.
