Anti-human PD-1 refers to a class of therapeutic monoclonal antibodies that target the Programmed Cell Death Protein 1 (PD-1) receptor on the surface of T cells. PD-1 is an immune checkpoint that normally limits T-cell activity to prevent excessive immune responses; however, many tumors exploit this pathway by expressing ligands (PD-L1 and PD-L2) that bind to PD-1 and 'turn off' the T cells. By binding to the human PD-1 receptor, these antibodies block the inhibitory interaction with its ligands, thereby 'releasing the brakes' on the immune system and allowing T cells to recognize and destroy cancer cells. This class of drugs, which includes agents such as pembrolizumab and nivolumab, has become a cornerstone of modern oncology, showing significant efficacy across a wide range of solid and hematologic malignancies.
