Anti-IL-16 monoclonal antibodies are a class of biologic therapies designed to neutralize Interleukin-16 (IL-16), a cytokine that acts as a chemoattractant and growth factor. In multiple myeloma, IL-16 is overexpressed in the bone marrow and promotes the proliferation and survival of malignant plasma cells by interacting with receptors such as CD4 and CD9. By binding to soluble or membrane-bound IL-16, these antibodies disrupt the autocrine and paracrine signaling loops that drive tumor progression. Research conducted at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf has demonstrated that anti-IL-16 antibodies can significantly inhibit the growth of myeloma cells, suggesting potential as a therapeutic strategy for this malignancy.
