anti-miR-148a is an antisense oligonucleotide designed to inhibit the function of microRNA-148a (miR-148a), an oncogenic microRNA that is frequently overexpressed in glioblastoma (GBM) and other malignancies. In GBM, miR-148a promotes tumor cell proliferation, migration, and invasion while inhibiting apoptosis by targeting the pro-apoptotic molecule BIM and the EGFR negative regulator MIG6. By sequestering miR-148a, anti-miR-148a restores the expression of these target proteins, thereby inducing apoptosis and reducing the self-renewal capacity of GBM stem cells. This therapeutic approach aims to counteract the oncogenic signaling pathways driven by miR-148a, particularly the activation of the EGFR pathway.
