anti-miR-27a is an antisense oligonucleotide (antagomir) designed to specifically bind and inhibit the activity of microRNA-27a (miR-27a). In oncological research, particularly epithelial ovarian cancer, miR-27a has been identified as a regulator of heparin-binding EGF-like growth factor (HB-EGF) by binding to its 3'UTR. While miR-27a often acts as a tumor suppressor in this context, anti-miR-27a is utilized in loss-of-function studies to demonstrate the reciprocal relationship between the miRNA and its target mRNA/protein. Experimental use of anti-miR-27a has shown it can upregulate endogenous hHB-EGF expression, providing insights into the miRNA-mediated deregulation pathways in human carcinogenesis.
