Anti-oxLDL IgM antibody refers to an immunoglobulin M (IgM) class monoclonal or polyclonal antibody that specifically recognizes and binds to oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL). Oxidized LDL is a modified form of LDL cholesterol implicated in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. The mechanism of action for these antibodies involves binding to oxidation-specific epitopes on oxLDL particles, thereby neutralizing their pro-inflammatory effects and promoting their clearance from circulation. This can inhibit macrophage chemotaxis and inflammation within arterial plaques, potentially stabilizing plaques and reducing the risk of rupture or thrombosis[1][2][5]. Experimental studies have shown that passive immunization with natural or engineered anti-oxLDL IgM antibodies (such as Moab A7S8) can reduce atherosclerotic plaque development in animal models[5]. In humans, higher levels of endogenous anti-oxLDL IgM are associated with protection against coronary artery disease progression[2][8]. These antibodies are being investigated primarily for secondary prevention in cardiovascular diseases such as coronary artery disease and myocardial infarction.
