Anti-PD-1 antibody-activated tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) is an autologous adoptive cell therapy being investigated by Sun Yat-sen University for the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The therapy involves harvesting naturally occurring T cells from a patient's tumor, which are then expanded ex vivo in the presence of interleukin-2 (IL-2) and an anti-PD-1 monoclonal antibody. The addition of the anti-PD-1 antibody during the expansion process is designed to prevent T-cell exhaustion and enhance the proliferative and cytotoxic potential of the TILs. Once re-infused into the patient, these "rejuvenated" TILs are better equipped to recognize and eliminate residual tumor cells. This approach is typically evaluated as an adjuvant therapy following surgical resection and chemotherapy to improve disease-free survival in stage II-IIIA NSCLC patients.
