Overview

The anti-PfGARP monoclonal antibody is a research-stage biologic being developed by Ocean Biomedical for the treatment and prevention of malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum. It targets the Plasmodium falciparum glutamic acid-rich protein (PfGARP), a 100-kDa antigen expressed on the surface of erythrocytes infected with the parasite. The lead candidate, clone mAb7899, binds to a specific epitope (amino acids 443-459) of PfGARP with high affinity (KD = 2.9 nM). Unlike traditional antimalarials that target metabolic pathways, this antibody triggers a programmed cell death-like mechanism in the parasite, resulting in significant parasite killing (94-99% in culture). It is being positioned as both a therapeutic for severe malaria and a prophylactic for travelers, military personnel, and individuals in malaria-endemic regions.
