Overview

Anti-pseudomonas IgY is a polyclonal antibody preparation derived from the egg yolks of hens immunized with Pseudomonas aeruginosa antigens. It is designed to provide passive immunization against P. aeruginosa by targeting bacterial surface components such as flagellin and other adhesion proteins. The mechanism of action involves binding to the bacteria, thereby preventing their adhesion to epithelial surfaces, promoting opsonization and phagocytosis by neutrophils (polymorphonuclear leukocytes), and neutralizing bacterial toxins. Anti-pseudomonas IgY does not have direct bactericidal activity but enhances host immune clearance of the pathogen[1][2][4][5][6]. It has been primarily developed for prophylactic use in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) to prevent or delay airway colonization and infection by P. aeruginosa, a major cause of morbidity in CF[2][3][6]. Clinical studies indicate that daily gargling or inhalation with this antibody preparation can reduce infection rates and inflammation without significant adverse effects[3][6]. The product is not yet widely approved but has been used on a named-patient basis in Sweden for CF patients[3].
