Overview

Anti-rotavirus IgY is an oral passive immunotherapy being developed by the Immunology Research Institute in Gifu (IRIG). It consists of immunoglobulin Y (IgY) antibodies extracted from the yolk of eggs laid by hens immunized against rotavirus. The therapy is designed to treat or prevent rotavirus-associated diarrhea in infants, young children, and immunocompromised adults. Upon oral administration, these IgY antibodies bind to and neutralize rotavirus particles within the gastrointestinal tract, preventing the virus from infecting intestinal epithelial cells and thereby reducing the severity and duration of diarrheal disease. The product is currently in the preclinical development phase, although the institute has conducted various research studies and clinical evaluation trials to examine the efficacy of its IgY preparations.
