Anti-SARS-CoV-2 convalescent plasma is a passive immunotherapy developed and evaluated by the Medical College of Wisconsin for the treatment of hospitalized patients with severe or life-threatening COVID-19. The therapy involves the transfusion of plasma collected from individuals who have recovered from SARS-CoV-2 infection, which contains a high concentration of polyclonal antibodies, primarily immunoglobulin G (IgG). These antibodies neutralize the virus by specifically targeting the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein and its receptor-binding domain (RBD), thereby blocking the virus's ability to enter host cells. This biologic therapy was administered under FDA Emergency Access protocols and the Mayo Clinic Expanded Access Program, with clinical studies focusing on its efficacy in reducing ventilatory requirements and mortality when administered early in the disease course.
