Anti-SARS-CoV-2 convalescent plasma (Centro Medico ABC) is an investigational biologic therapy developed by the ABC Medical Center in Mexico for the treatment of severe and critical COVID-19 pneumonia. This passive immunotherapy involves the administration of plasma collected from donors who have recovered from COVID-19 and possess high titers of anti-SARS-CoV-2 polyclonal antibodies, primarily of the IgG isotype. These antibodies function by binding to and neutralizing the SARS-CoV-2 virus, thereby preventing viral entry into host cells and facilitating viral clearance. The therapy was evaluated in an open-label, non-randomized Phase 2 clinical trial (NCT04432103) comparing hospitalized patients receiving the plasma to a historical cohort of matched controls. This intervention is part of a clinical research protocol rather than a commercial pharmaceutical product.
