Overview

Anti-SARS-CoV-2 plasma, also known as COVID-19 Convalescent Plasma (CCP), is a biologic product derived from the blood of individuals who have recovered from SARS-CoV-2 infection. It contains high titers of polyclonal human antibodies, primarily neutralizing IgG, that target the SARS-CoV-2 virus, specifically the spike protein. Developed and studied by Johns Hopkins University, it was investigated as a passive immunotherapy for post-exposure prophylaxis in adults exposed to COVID-19. In a randomized, double-blinded Phase 2 trial, high-titer CCP was compared against non-immune control plasma to determine its efficacy in preventing symptomatic infection. The antibodies in the plasma act by binding to and neutralizing the pathogen, thereby providing immediate but temporary passive immunity.
