Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Anti-SARS-CoV-2 scFv antibodies are single-chain variable fragment (scFv) antibodies engineered to target and neutralize the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Typically isolated from phage display antibody libraries constructed from the convalescent plasma of recovered COVID-19 patients or immunized animal models, these recombinant antibody fragments consist of the variable regions of the heavy (VH) and light (VL) chains of immunoglobulins connected by a flexible peptide linker. They are designed to bind specific epitopes on the SARS-CoV-2 spike glycoprotein, such as the receptor-binding domain (RBD) or the S1 and S2 subunits, thereby blocking the interaction between the viral spike protein and the host cell receptor angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) to prevent viral entry. Due to their small size, lack of an Fc domain (which reduces the risk of antibody-dependent enhancement), and potential for cost-effective production in non-mammalian expression systems, they are being investigated as alternative therapeutic and diagnostic candidates for COVID-19, including via intranasal or aerosol delivery.
