Overview

DFU/PhagoPIED is an investigational topical bacteriophage cocktail targeting Staphylococcus aureus for the treatment of infected diabetic foot ulcers (DFU). [2, 4] The therapy consists of a combination of multiple bacteriophages, which are viruses that specifically infect and kill bacteria. [3, 13] The cocktail, developed by Pherecydes Pharma (now PHELISSA), is active against both methicillin-susceptible (MSSA) and methicillin-resistant (MRSA) strains of S. aureus. [2, 5] It is being evaluated in the PhagoPIED clinical trial (NCT02664740), a Phase 1/2 study sponsored by CHU Nîmes, where it is applied as a liquid solution on a sterile compress to the wound. [2, 4] The therapeutic approach aims to provide a targeted antibacterial effect, resolving the infection and promoting wound healing, as an alternative or adjunct to conventional antibiotics.
