Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Anti-Staphylococcus aureus therapeutic phages are bacteriophages (viruses) specifically selected or engineered to target, infect, and lyse Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, including multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains such as methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA). In the context of the French PHAG-ONE project, led by the Hospices Civils de Lyon (HCL) in collaboration with INSERM and CNRS, a public platform has been established to manufacture GMP-grade therapeutic phages. This program has developed a cocktail of four strictly virulent anti-S. aureus phages (including Silviavirus phages such as V1SA19, V1SA20, and V1SA22) that collectively cover approximately 88% of the genetic and clinical diversity of S. aureus. These phages are designed for intravenous and local administration to treat severe infections, such as bone and joint infections, and are being deployed for compassionate use and clinical trials.
