Overview

Anti-TAG-72-conjugated near-infrared fluorescent human serum albumin nanoparticles are an experimental diagnostic imaging agent designed for the early detection of colorectal cancer. These nanoparticles are composed of a human serum albumin (HSA) core containing a near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent dye, specifically a carboxylic acid derivative of IR-783 known as CANIR. The surface of the nanoparticles is functionalized with monoclonal antibodies targeting tumor-associated glycoprotein-72 (TAG-72), a glycoprotein highly expressed in various solid tumors, including colon cancer. By targeting TAG-72, the nanoparticles accumulate in neoplastic tissues, allowing for high-sensitivity NIR fluorescence imaging. Research conducted at Bar-Ilan University and The Hebrew University of Jerusalem has demonstrated their ability to detect small, otherwise invisible colon tumors in animal models, potentially offering a superior diagnostic tool compared to standard colonoscopy.
