Overview

This entry refers to a randomized Phase 4 clinical trial protocol (NCT00113269) conducted by the University of Miami to compare three distinct induction immunosuppression strategies in living donor kidney transplant recipients. The study evaluates the effectiveness and toxicity of rabbit anti-thymocyte globulin (Thymoglobulin), alemtuzumab (Campath-1H), and daclizumab (Zenapax). The primary objective of the trial was to determine if these induction therapies could allow for the avoidance or minimization of long-term nephrotoxic calcineurin inhibitor (CNI) maintenance therapy while maintaining graft survival and preventing rejection. Anti-thymocyte globulin is a polyclonal antibody that provides broad T-cell depletion; alemtuzumab is a humanized monoclonal antibody targeting CD52 for lymphocyte depletion; and daclizumab is a monoclonal antibody that blocks the alpha subunit (CD25) of the IL-2 receptor on activated T cells to inhibit proliferation.
