Overview

An anti-VEGFR2 antibody is a monoclonal antibody designed to bind to and inhibit the Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Receptor 2 (VEGFR2), a critical receptor tyrosine kinase involved in angiogenesis. VEGFR2, also known as KDR in humans and Flk-1 in mice, is primarily expressed on vascular endothelial cells and mediates the majority of the downstream effects of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF), including cell proliferation, migration, and survival. By blocking the interaction between VEGF ligands and VEGFR2, these antibodies suppress the formation of new blood vessels that tumors require for growth and metastasis. Ramucirumab (Cyramza) is the most well-known FDA-approved therapeutic in this category, indicated for several solid tumors. In research contexts, such as the glioblastoma study mentioned in the provided text, anti-VEGFR2 antibodies are used to investigate the role of angiogenesis in tumor progression and are often evaluated in combination with other targeted therapies like EGFR inhibitors.
