Overview

Anti-vipérin is a bivalent equine-derived antivenom developed and manufactured by the Pasteur Institute of Algeria (Institut Pasteur d'Algérie). It is specifically indicated for the treatment of envenomation caused by the bites of the two most medically significant vipers in the North African region: the Horned Viper (*Cerastes cerastes*) and the Levantine Viper (*Macrovipera lebetina*). The serum consists of purified immunoglobulin fragments (typically F(ab')2) obtained from the plasma of horses hyperimmunized with the venoms of these species. Its mechanism of action involves the specific binding and neutralization of various venom components, including hemorrhagins, cytotoxins, and enzymes, thereby preventing their interaction with host tissues and facilitating their clearance. It is an essential therapeutic agent in the management of viperid snakebites in Algeria and neighboring regions.
