Overview

antibiotic prophylaxis-Hamilton Health Sciences Corporation-febrile urinary tract infection refers to a specific clinical intervention protocol evaluated in the APPrUV (Antibiotic Prophylaxis in VCUG) pilot randomized controlled trial. Sponsored by Hamilton Health Sciences Corporation, this regimen involves the administration of a single oral dose of either trimethoprim (for infants younger than 2 months) or trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (for infants aged 2 months to 3 years) prior to a voiding cystourethrogram (VCUG) procedure. The primary objective is to reduce the incidence of post-procedure febrile urinary tract infections (fUTI), a known complication of VCUG. Trimethoprim acts by binding to and inhibiting the enzyme dihydrofolate reductase, while sulfamethoxazole inhibits dihydropteroate synthase; together, they block successive steps in the bacterial synthesis of essential nucleic acids and proteins.
