Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Antibiotics-resistant lactic acid bacteria (marketed under the brand name Lebenin by Wakamoto Pharmaceutical) is a live biotherapeutic product consisting of three antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains: Bifidobacterium infantis, Lactobacillus acidophilus, and Streptococcus faecalis (Enterococcus faecalis). It is approved in Japan as a prescription drug to improve gastrointestinal symptoms and restore normal intestinal flora (dysbiosis) in patients undergoing treatment with antibiotics (such as penicillins, cephalosporins, aminoglycosides, macrolides, and tetracyclines) or chemotherapeutic agents (such as nalidixic acid). Because these strains are specifically cultured to be resistant to these antimicrobial agents, they can survive and proliferate in the gut during antibiotic therapy, producing lactic acid and other organic acids to inhibit the overgrowth of pathogenic bacteria and prevent antibiotic-associated diarrhea.
