Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Anticoagulant Citrate Dextrose Solution A (ACD-A) is a sterile, non-pyrogenic solution used primarily as an extracorporeal anticoagulant in apheresis procedures and for the preservation of whole blood and blood components. Its primary mechanism of action involves the chelation of ionized calcium by citrate ions. Since calcium is a critical cofactor (Factor IV) in the coagulation cascade, its sequestration prevents the conversion of prothrombin to thrombin and the subsequent formation of fibrin clots. The solution also contains dextrose, which serves as a metabolic substrate for red blood cells, maintaining their viability during storage or processing. ACD-A is widely utilized in automated blood collection systems and cell processing applications.
