Overview

This antigen-loaded dendritic cell vaccine is an autologous cellular immunotherapy developed for the treatment of advanced melanoma. The therapy involves the in vitro generation of dendritic cells (DCs) from a patient's own peripheral blood mononuclear cells, which are then loaded with melanoma-specific tumor antigens (peptides). As professional antigen-presenting cells, these loaded DCs are injected subcutaneously to migrate to secondary lymphatic organs where they prime and activate tumor-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes (killer T cells). The goal of this vaccination is to induce a robust, targeted immune response capable of recognizing and eliminating melanoma cells in patients with inoperable stage III or IV disease. This specific treatment protocol was evaluated in clinical trials led by Prof. Dr. Silke Gillessen at the Kantonsspital St. Gallen.
