Overview

Antilymphocyte serum (ALS) is a serum containing gamma-globulins which are antibodies against lymphocyte antigens. It is primarily used as an immunosuppressive agent in organ transplantation to prevent rejection and in the treatment of aplastic anemia. The mechanism of action involves targeting lymphocyte surface proteins, causing rapid clearance of antibody-lymphocyte complexes by the reticuloendothelial system, which leads to selective ablation of recirculating lymphocytes. This results in decreased numbers of T lymphocytes involved in both cell-mediated and humoral immunity.
