Overview

Antimicrobial TheraGauze (ATG) is an investigational antimicrobial wound dressing developed by Eastern Virginia Medical School for the treatment of skin abscesses and furunculosis. It consists of TheraGauze, a commercially available wound dressing with a unique microvillous structure, impregnated with the aminoglycoside antibiotic tobramycin at a concentration of 3 mg/mL. The dressing is designed to provide localized delivery of tobramycin directly to the wound bed, targeting pathogens such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) while minimizing systemic absorption. Tobramycin exerts its effect by binding to the 16S ribosomal RNA component of the bacterial 30S ribosomal subunit, thereby inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. This product is intended to serve as a localized antimicrobial wound packing material for patients requiring incision and drainage of skin abscesses.
