antimiR-708 is an antisense oligonucleotide (ASO) designed to specifically bind to and inhibit the activity of microRNA-708 (miR-708). In the context of muscular dystrophies such as Duchenne (DMD) and Becker (BMD), miR-708-5p has been identified as a negative regulator of neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) expression. By sequestering miR-708, antimiR-708 aims to prevent the degradation or translational repression of nNOS mRNA, thereby restoring nNOS protein levels and improving muscle function and fatigability. Beyond muscular dystrophy, miR-708 inhibition is also explored in various cancers and ocular diseases where the microRNA is aberrantly expressed and contributes to disease progression or endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress.
