Overview

Antiscorpion venom serum is a biologic antivenom used for the treatment of clinical signs and symptoms resulting from envenomation by scorpions. It consists of refined antibodies derived from equine (horse) plasma that has been immunized with specific scorpion venoms. The preparation is typically freeze-dried and reconstituted before intravenous administration. The mechanism of action involves the passive transfer of antibodies that bind to and neutralize neurotoxins present in the scorpion venom, thereby preventing these toxins from interacting with their physiological targets in the body[1][2][3][4]. This leads to rapid resolution of systemic symptoms such as muscle control loss, abnormal eye movements, respiratory distress, excessive salivation, vomiting, and other neurological manifestations[3][4]. Antiscorpion venom serums are indicated for moderate to severe cases of envenomation where systemic toxicity is evident. Severe hypersensitivity reactions can occur due to its equine origin; thus monitoring during administration is required[3][7].
