Overview

Antisense retinoic acid receptor beta2 refers to a genetic construct, typically an antisense cDNA or oligonucleotide, designed to specifically inhibit the expression of the Retinoic Acid Receptor Beta 2 (RAR-beta2) isoform. RAR-beta2 is a member of the thyroid-steroid hormone receptor superfamily and acts as a ligand-dependent transcription factor that often functions as a tumor suppressor in various cancers, including esophageal and oral squamous cell carcinomas. In research settings, antisense RAR-beta2 is utilized to downregulate the receptor's expression to investigate its biological role, such as its ability to suppress cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression. By blocking RAR-beta2, researchers can induce COX-2 and promote tumor cell growth, thereby confirming the receptor's role in mediating retinoid-induced growth inhibition and clinical response.
