Overview

Antithrombin alfa is a recombinant form of human antithrombin produced using recombinant DNA technology in the milk of transgenic goats. It is an anticoagulant protein used for the prevention of peri-operative and peri-partum thromboembolic events in patients with hereditary deficiency of antithrombin during high-risk situations such as surgery or childbirth. The drug works by inhibiting thrombin and Coagulation factor X, key serine proteases involved in blood coagulation, thereby reducing the risk of abnormal clot formation. Antithrombin alfa normalizes plasma antithrombin activity levels to prevent venous thromboembolism (VTE) in these patients[1][2][4].
