Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**Antithrombin III concentrate** is a purified, sterile, lyophilized human plasma–derived protein product designed for intravenous replacement therapy in patients with hereditary antithrombin deficiency. Its principal mechanism is the direct replacement of missing or deficient antithrombin, a key endogenous inhibitor of thrombin and other activated coagulation factors (primarily factor Xa and thrombin), thereby restoring physiologic regulation of coagulation and preventing unwanted clot formation. The concentrate is indicated specifically for the treatment and prevention of thromboembolism, and for perioperative and peripartum prophylaxis in individuals with hereditary antithrombin deficiency[1][2][3][5]. Heparin strongly potentiates the activity of antithrombin, so the concentrate may be used alone or to augment heparin therapy[1][2][3][5].
